Former President Biden set ambitious climate goals for the United States, aiming for 100% carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035 and economy-wide greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050467. These targets provide a strong foundation for the expansion of a sustainable energy economy. California plays a key role in this effort and has already made significant progress: in 2021, 43.55% of its net electricity generation came from renewable sources, including 6.64% from biomass, placing the state second nationwide in this category.
California is characterized by one of the lowest per capita energy consumption rates in the U.S., thanks to focused efforts to increase energy efficiency. The state possesses abundant renewable energy resources – solar, hydro, geothermal, and biomass – that significantly contribute to achieving climate goals. Bioenergy production in California is diverse: in 2022, 24% of bioenergy was generated from municipal waste, 53% from wood and forestry residues, and 23% from agricultural residues. This broad resource base and commitment to innovation make California a leader in the transition to a low-carbon energy future.
